Religious texts based on N.T. with 31 individual promises from scripture to be pleaded at the "mercy-seat"- a quintessential Victorian devotional "pocketbook," designed for daily spiritual resilience and personal piety. It was written by John Ross Macduff (1818–1895), a prolific Scottish minister known for his intensely evangelical and comforting tone. His writings were among the most popular of the era, frequently focused on providing solace during "seasons of sorrow". The circa 1885 edition is noteworthy as it represents the Religious Tract Society at the height of its commercial and charitable success, shortly before its centennial jubilee in 1899.
