David Bogue (1807/8-1856) came to London from Scotland in 1836 and worked as shop assistant to Charles Tilt at 86 Fleet Street from 1836; in partnership with Tilt from 1840, and succeeded him in 1842 (purchasing the firm for about £50,000). His chief success was as Cruikshank's principal publisher, but his rival H. G. Bohn imitated many of his ventures.
