Established in 1222, the University of Padua (Padova in Italian) is the second oldest university in Italy, after Bologna, and one of the earliest universities in the world. It was originally founded as a school of law by a group of scholars and students who had come from Bologna in pursuit of greater academic freedom. Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), Polish mathematician and astronomer, who placed the Sun at centre of the Solar System, had attended this Unversity three hundred years earlier. Uncommon work of the Paduan physicist Salvatore Dal Negro (1768-1839), Professor of Experimental Physics in the Napoleonic period, whose interests were directed towards the phenomena of electric power and the construction of electrostatic machines. In this work Salvatore exhibited several improvements he'd recently made to his battery (150 discs arranged in three columns & connected in series) and experiments comparing static electricity and electrical currents. Ronalds 123-4. WorldCat locates only one copy held in a UK library (the National Library of Scotland) and only one in any Italian library (Biblioteca Rosminiana, Rovereto). Bookseller Inventory # 5052
