With prize book label on front paste-down endpaper, from the Lords of the Committee of the Privy Council on Education, Science & Art Department, to George Morgan at the Cheltenham School of Art. Title page with official stamp embossed ("Department of Science and Art, Reward" and with the emblem of Queen Victoria's crown in the centre). First & last few leaves with slight foxing. All edges red. 15 x 20.5 cm. Prize binding in gently patinated treacly brown morocco. Spine in six compartments with gilt lettering, floral blind tooling and double-ruled raised bands. Spine very lightly sun-toned. Upper and lower covers with Queen Victoria's crest (in blind on lower cover but in gilt on upper cover), within fleur de lys and floreate embellished strapwork designed borders, embossed in blind. Corners very slightly worn. There was a widespread demand for reference books on antiquities and this popular work ran into more than one edition.
