Original brown cloth binding, spine with gilt titling, boards with blind ruled borders. Corners very slightly bumped. Nearly 800 broadsides and proclamations, principally grants of indulgences, ballads, historical broadsides in prose, with engravings and woodcut illustrations; arranged in chronological order from 1513 to 1860, from the times of Henry VIII to Victoria. PROVENANCE: Ruari McLean (1917-2006) was a leading British typographic designer. McLean was a personal friend of A.R.Dufty, President of the Society of Antiquaries 1978- 81. and designed his book "Kelmscott. An Illustrated Guide" published by the Society and printed by the Curwen Press in 1969. National Library of Scotland purchased part of the private library and working collection of Ruari McLean, a former Trustee of the Library, in 1994. It comprises a collection of German books notable for their design or illustration, books designed by Ruari McLean, manuscripts and printed books of Jan Tschichold (1902-74), the working notebooks of Ruari McLean, and a substantial collection of design ephemera.
