42 consecutive monthly magazine issues #242, January 1971 to #283, June 1974. Between c. 78 & 96 printed pages in each of the 42 monthly issues. All profusely illustrated with mainly colour photographs, mainy full-page. 22 x 29 cm. In January 1946 Réalités review was founded by Didier Rémon (1922) and Hubert Frèrejean (1914-2001) with Alfred Max as editor and Alfred Brandler as artistic director on the model of the American magazine Fortune. Réalités provided long articles and photojournalism on the news and cultural developments during the Thirty Glorious Years post-war. It was innovative and influential, thanks to heavyweight paper, exceptionally frequent use of colour, aesthetic layout, prominent high quality photographs, choice of topics, editorial foresight, about 15 monthly good quality substantial & innovative articles by talented authors and the originality of the cover. The regular writers included John Berger on art, Anthony Storr on human psychology, Cyril Connolly, Rebecca West, Sacheverel Sitwell, Hugo Williams, William Sansom, Elizabeth Bowen, John Julius Norwich, Al Alvarez & Arnold Toynbee. Among the main photographers who regularly collaborated with the monthly were Edouard Boubat (1923-99),working under the inspired editor Bertie Gilou during 1950-75, Boubat flourished as a globe-trotting photo-journalist covering industry, science and development. The role suited his temperament, focusing less on detailed photo narratives but more on small groups of images within a loosely defined subject, a French humanist who caught the simple beauty of everyday life. Among his colleagues were Jean-Philippe Charbonnier , Michel Desjardins, Jean-Louis Swiners, Patrick Hamilton & Frank Horvat. A notable exhibition in 2008 at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris) on the magazine, Réalités displayed a selection of original issues, aiming to reflect the influence of the magazine on the history of post-war French photography. This journalistic adventure, from 1946 to 1978, provided a benchmark for the illustrated press , told the story of a nascent consumer society & captured peoples and places that have substantially disappeared or changed. Runs of this ephemeral periodical, quintessentially of a bygone era, are no longer easy to find. Bookseller Inventory # 4397 Please email me to find out the cost of shipping before placing your order.
