First edition thus. 345 printed pages.  Map, frontispiece and 49 vignette steel engraved illustrations.  Faded contemporary ink inscription and ladies armorial engraved bookplate on front-free endpaper.  13.5 x 20 cm. Original tan dimpled cloth (corners and head & tail of spine slightly worn).  Spine with gilt scrolling decorative ornamental horizontal borders with gilt titling.  Boards with blind stamped horizontal triple fillet rules and gilt stamped representation of a stag or red deer, in its natural habitat. This edition became popular and was reissued in a number of different subsequent editions. WorldCat only locates a single copy worldwide at University of Waterloo Library, Ontario, Canada.  Very scarce original example of a highly collectable natural history title.
