Includes pink addendum slip "1892-3 New Railway from Jaffa to Jerusalem.". Two large folding maps in pockets in the front and rear, 2 folding maps, 1 plate and 22 text maps or plans. Very slight foxing on the two sepaprate maps, but not obtrusively aged. Publisher's blue advert endpapers. Inner front hinge split but binding still solid. 12 x 17 cm. Proprietary red cloth binding with gilt lettering. Spine slightly age-toned and wrinkled near the top. Boards in very good condition despite minor historic handling blemishes. Corners a little rubbed. The Rev. Haskett Smith was ordained in 1870 and in the same year was appointed second master of Lincoln Grammar School. In the late seventies he went to Palestine, and lived on Mount Carmel for many years. He was a great traveller, and explored extensively in Oriental countries. He had lectured in almost every quarter of the globe including Egypt, Palestine and the East and wrote several books. He edited Murray s Guide to Syria and Palestine" with the significant benefit of knowledge of the very many contemporary archeological discoveries by the Palestine Exploration Fund, who advised closely on these contents bringing it fully up to date.
