Engraved title and index pages. 22 double-page hand-coloured engraved maps. 33 page index and 16 page publisher's catalogue at the back. No date but bound-in publisher's catalogue at rear dated October 1842. Dark ink stain on map viii, affecting the inset island of Sardinia. Largely marginal dark ink stain on map xiii near the Black Sea. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the front free endpaper of Stamford Grammar School, G.Simpson August 25th 1843 and of John Lamont, 8 St. Mary's Road Canonbury. Inner hinges split but binding is still firm and solid. 16 x 22 cm. Quarter red roan binding with yellow marbled baords. Original printed paper label on upper cover. Spine somewhat worn, corners slightly worn and bumped. Boards slightly rubbed.Provenance: Stamford School was founded in 1532 by William Radcliffe, the alderman of Stamford. He died without issue and left all his money to endow a priest-schoolmaster and to teach grammar in Stamford. An 11th century chapel, a part of St Paul s Church, was acquired and became the schoolroom. For 339 years, the new School was governed by a private Act of Parliament of 1548/9.
