Portrait frontispiece,14, [2], [40 facsimile] printed pages. The facsimile reproduces the original holograph manuscript on lined blue prison paper. Frontispiece portrait from a drawing by Phil May. Introduction by Merlin Holland. One (number 328) of 495 numbered copies. 23 x 38 cm. Original blue cloth covered boards with gilt title on the spine. This copy, unusually, retains the complete brown paper wrapping and cardboard case that it was originally sold with. Written on blue prison paper, this is the confessional letter from Reading gaol addressed to Lord Alfred (Bosie) Douglas. It is a defence of Wilde's opinions and conduct, and reads emotionally and lyrically as he plumbs the depth of his feelings for his sometime friend. This important literary document is presented just as it was first sold twenty years ago. Bookseller Inventory # 4306
