192 printed pages. Frontispiece. Profusely illustrated with duotone photographs. 25 x 30 cm. faux leather, "rexine" boards, white lettering to spine, blind stamp lettering to front board. Rear board with small abrasion in the centre. In 1956 mercury was discovered in the fishing grounds of Minamata, discharged by the Chisso chemical works. Smith and his wife Aileen lived there 1972 -4 and recorded the suffering of the victims and their campaign for compensation. On one occasion Smith was beaten up by Chisso employees. Smith's Minamata reportage is one of the most powerful in history. The photos were exhibited at the International Center of Photography in New York.
