YOUNG PERSON'S FIRST GUIDE TO LONDON, ENGLAND.

xvi, 211 pages.  Complete with a frontispiece and 27 plates, each comprising two or three vignette scenes  (dated Nov. 20 1818 or October 1824); Fletcher of Southampton's bookseller's label on paste-down endpaper. Owner's ink inscriprion dated 1825 on front free endpaper. Some very slight occasional foxing to the plates. 11.5 x 17.5 cm.  Original quarter red roan and drab boards. Spine with eight gilt fillets and gilt title (rubbed with slight wear to head of spine). Upper board with engraved vignette of heraldic shield within black lettering ("This is London! How Do You Like It") -printed title & publisher. Back board with vignette of St. Paul's Cathedral within circular belt border lettered "Harris & Sons. Original Juvenile Library" (rubbed, corners slightly bumped).

This edition has five more plates than the first edition published in 1818 as "A Visit to Uncle William in Town".

Several hundred buildings and points of interest are described, from the Synagogue of the German Jews and Bullock’s Museum on Piccadilly (‘in the Egyptian style’) to the construction site of Southwark Bridge (opened 1819). Osborne, I, 193.
