725, [5] printed pages; bound without the map as usual. Owner's engraved book label of "M.A.Gibbs" on front paste-down endpaper. Endpapers very slightly age-toned. 12 x 19 cm. Contemporary full blind tooled calf. Spine with five, double gilt-ruled compartments. Spine with vertical patination cracks & with some wear to the hinges at the top. Boards with scrolling blind tooling within blind double-ruled borders, with very slight staining and edge-wear; corners bumped & slightly worn. The binding exudes a treacly chestnut patina, polished by 172 years of gentle handling. This is a superb snapshot/overview of the county in 1848. Later editions were published in 1850 & 1863. William White was the author of over 80 histories, directories & gazetteers. Mary A. Gibbs was born 1847 & lived in Plaistow, West Ham, Essex. Bookseller Inventory # 4406
