Contemporaryalf calf and marbled boards; black leather label with gilt lettering and triple gilt horizontal rules  on spine (scuffed and slightly rubbed particularly at foot of spine, joints weak but holding firmly,  light foxing throughout, most noticeacle in the preliminaries). Freeman, British Natural History Books, 4003 (a translation of Grundriss der Kräuterkunde, Berlin, 1792). A later edition was published in 1811. An academic survey of plants and of natural history. Carl Ludwig Willdenow (1765-1812) was a German botanist, pharmacist, and plant taxonomist. He is considered one of the founders of phytogeography, the study of the geographic distribution of plants. Willdenow was also a mentor of Alexander von Humboldt, one of the earliest and best known phytogeographers. He also influenced Christian Konrad Sprengel, who pioneered the study of plant pollination and floral biology.
