Title: MINIATURE KORAN or QUR'AN, IN ARABIC, IN SILVER CASE
Publication Date: c.1890
Binding: Hardcover
Book Condition: Very Good
c.1890. 571 printed pages (page numbers in arabic and in roman numerals) on India paper. Title page with wide decorative frame, decorative page dividers, line borders throughout. 18 x 22 mm. Original blue morocco with diaper pattern of regular vertical wavy gilt lines producing a framework for gilt lozenge and dot motifs (some very slight rubbing on hinges). All edges gilt. Beautifully preserved in contemporary, silver Koran case, with repousse scrolling diagonal patterns within zigzag borders on all sides, and with a solid loop (lacking the lid, some slight tarnishing) -after tests, it appears to be made of unmarked silver. Miniature Korans were better able to be displayed, worn, carried and given away as gifts and their affordability when produced and their attractive appearance has always had a strong emotional and practical appeal since the earliest examples of the tenth century. This Koran has an Ottoman Empire certification page at the rear, dating it as post 1870 & attesting to the accuracy of the sacred text (since it was a punishable transgression to change it at all).
