xvi, 79 printed pages. Engraved title-page by Davenport, dated November 21st, 1820 (foxed). All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Inner gilt dentelles. Contemporary ownership signature in copper-plate ink hand, dated 1929 "Miss C. Charman" on blank preliminary leaf. Sporadic and very slight spotting and age toning. 8.5 x 13 cm. Contemporary blue calf with spine hand tooled in gilt floral motifs with two raised bands and central claret morocco gilt lettered label. Boards with hand-tooled gilt acanthus, palmette and honeysuckle motif corner-pieces and twelve gilt fillet borders (very slightly rubbed, corners worn and slightly bumped). The contents are : "On dissipation -- On conversation -- On envy -- On sentimental connexions -- On true and false meekness -- On education -- On religion -- Miscellaneous thoughts on genius, taste, good sense, &c." Hannah More was the most influential woman living in England during her day. Counter-revolutionary bluestocking and evangelical reformer, Hannah More (1745-1833) was one of the best selling women authors in Georgian Britain.Through her writings, political actions and personal relationships, she carried out a radical program for social change in the existing British social and political order. Hannah More, like Wollstonecraft, was largely self-educated & devoted her life to reforming the culture of the English nation from within. What she desired was a revolution in manners or cultural mores, a radical change in the moral behaviour of the nation. This is a particularly handsomely bound copy from an eminent proto-feminist.
