vii,648(1) printed pages. Printed on fine india paper. Photo reduction technique employed to produce text in three columns. Last printed page covers English coins and measurements. Yellow edges (toned). Yellow endpapers (stained with contemporary ownership inscription in ink to the rear). Historic damp stains to first 156 pages, slightly affecting legibility of text. Half title slightly loose. 21 x 28 mm. Original maroon leather, with gilt titles to the front and spine and an advert for Pears' soap to the rear ("Savon PEARS Soap"). Discolouration particularly to upper cover. Complete with original metal case (with magnifier and loop at top). Rubbing and discolouration to the outside of the case which inside is brighter silver. Contains more than 5,000 words, sentences and idiomatic phrases. Considering the size of the print, it is unexpectably readable with the magnifier. This famous publishing firm was started in 1832 in Glasgow, Scotland and went into miniature books from 1876 until 1913, when it permanently closed down. Although thousands of these dictionaries were issued, according to Bondy, they are now becoming quite scarce and are much rarer than the Smallest English Dictionary in the World. Bondy, 107.
