Circa 1900. 384 printed pages. Portrait frontispiece of Dr. Johnson. All edges yellow. 19 x 28mm. Original red leather with "English dictionary" in gilt capital letters on front cover and "PEARS" in larger gilt capital letters on the lower cover. Pears manufactured soap and Bryce tied up an advertising deal with the vast commercial soap-sellers for his dictionaries for a number of years. Contemporary silver locket, full and clear set of hallmarks in 2 places for Sampson Mordan & Co, 1893 (Lion rampant, Leopard, "S"). Magnifying glass loop built into locket and hallmarked silver ring for charm bracelet on top. This is the sterling silver deluxe version, when the standard version was sold with a pressed metal locket. At the time of publication, it probably was the smallest English dictionary in the world, thanks to David Bryce & Son's use of photo-mechanical reduction in large-scale book production. Bondy, 106.
