Twelve colour plates plus numerous illustrations -humourous line drawings within the text. Extensively inscribed by Hilda Duke (over 60 entries). Some pages loose and hinges cracked. Handling marks and age-toning. 14 x 19 cm. Original tan decorative cloth. Binding loose and with wear and marks. A birthday book to accompany Farrow's 'Kingdom of Why' series of nonsense books, similar in style to Lewis Carroll's. Hilda Mary Duke was eight years old in 1904 and lived with her parents, John Duke (born 1867) a former upholsterer's foreman, his wife Agnes and brother Frank Leslie Duke. Their family had just moved from 6 Ledbury Road, Reigate back to Oxford: John was now a Park Constable, living at North Lodge of the University Parks. Bookseller Inventory # 4308
