Title: In His Own Write>>>SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY<<...

Publisher: Jonathan Cape - London, UK.

Publication Date: 1964

Binding: Hardcover

Book Condition: Very Good

Signed: Signed by Author, John Lennon.

Edition: 1st Edition, 1st Printing.

Signed by John Lennon in ink on front free endpaper at the private launch party. First edition, first printing. 26 drawings and 31 pieces of writing, including 23 prose pieces and eight poems by Lennon. Introduction by Paul McCartney. 80 printed pages (extremely mild spotting to the foredge of the page block & to preliminary pages). Designed by photographer Robert Freeman. 14 x 18 cm. Original laminated blue boards (some tiny, extremely mild abrasions to the spine, covers, hinges and corners). PROVENANCE: Signed by Lennon at the publication party at the offices of Jonathan Cape, the publishers on March 22nd 1964. This copy brought home by Jonathan Cape's managing director, Michael S. Howard and given directly and personally to a member of his family (accompanying signed & dated testament from family member, "we were there when Cape finally published John Lennon's book and I remember [Michael Howard] arriving home, very animated and excited. I think there must have been some sort of celebration in the office with John Lennon that day. I remember Michael saying that John Lennon had even sat on his desk! Michael came home that night with a number of copies of the book, "In His Own Write" which John Lennon had signed and gave us a copy"). The lauch party event is documented by John C. Winn, "Way Beyond Compare" 2008. There were only 25,000 copies of this first printing, necessitating several reprints, including two in the last week of March 1964 and five more by January 1965. In its first ten months, the book sold almost 200,000 copies, eventually reaching around 300,000 copies bought in Britain. Lennon worked spontaneously, generally not returning to pieces after writing them & reported that his work on the book's illustrations was the most drawing he had done since leaving art school. Michael Howard's reported delight at meeting Lennon reflects the impact of the Beatles a month after their first visit to USA & during the Beatlemania hysteria that surrounded the group. It is rare for a signed copy of Lennon's first book to have such a key association and well recorded provenance. Seller Inventory # 5130
