Folding engraved map of the West Indies and the Isthmus, folding engraved map of the Bay of Darien and full-page map of the Galapagos, 3 maps total with some offsetting. Re-bound in full dark green (possibly continental) calf. Spine in five compartments with raised bands and twored morocco labels with gilt lettering. Some slight general handling wear and corners slightly bumped. Originally the fourth volume of a set [Burney, James: A CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF THE DISCOVERIES IN THE SOUTH SEA OR PACIFIC OCEAN. London: Printed by Luke Hansard for G. & W. Nicol [and others], 1803-1806- 1813-1816-1817. Five volumes.], this edition has a new title page and was issued separately. Volume IV was apparently particularly popular, as it contains Burney s account of the pirates. This section of the work was republished separately in 1816 as History of the Buccaneers of America (London, 1816). During Cook s second voyage, Burney had served as an able seaman aboard the Resolution and as second lieutenant on the Adventure, acting as interpreter to Omai on his return to England. In 1776, he again sailed with Cook on the third voyage and served as first lieutenant of the Resolution before being transferred to the command of the ship on Clerke s death. Burney witnessed Cook s death in Hawaii, and his accounts of the third voyage ( Captain James Cook on the North-west Coast of America chapter XIX, Captain Cook through Bering s Strait, and in the Sea North of the Strait chapter XX, and Sequel chapter XXI) contain important material not found elsewhere. 1st edition very scarce. Sabin, 9388. Hill, 222. WorldCat locates just six copies (at National Maritime Museum, Reading, UEA, Bibliothèque nationale de France, National Library of Scotland, & Hamburg).
