Three volumes. Published 1964, 1965, & 1966. 212; 222; 256 printed pages. Each volume with 2 maps and 20 lithographic plates. First volume with the bookplate of John Shaw of Welburn Manor on the front free endpaper. Top edges coloured. 16.5 x 24 cm. Red, orange and tan cloth bindings respectively. Complete with unclipped pictorial dustwrappers. Very minor shelf wear and very slight wear to head of spine of first dustwrapper. Edward Lear (1812-88) travelled extensively and achieved fame as a lithographer, landscape artist, author and illustrator of numerous travel books. He is now remembered, however, for his five volumes of nonsense poetry and prose. Major John Edward Durrant Shaw (1894 1952), became High Sheriff of Yorkshire from 1939 to 1940. Welburn Hall was built during the 17th century. During the First World War Welburn Hall was a convalescent hospital for injured soldiers and in the Second World War it housed children who were evacuated from the Adela Shaw hospital in Kirkbymoorside.
